Content and Scope of Collection

This collection represents the publications files which were transferred to Archives from the Communication Services Department in 1989. This department has traditionally been responsible for both in-house and patron-oriented publication materials. However, for historical purposes, the files were heavily weeded of materials that only had temporary, functional value, such as interdepartmental forms, form letters, and new materials lists. Duplicate materials (Staff Association, Staff Institutes, staff newsletters, board reports) which can be found in other VCPL collections were also weeded.

The scope of this collection focuses on library publications which provide information to the public and which reflect library activities, resources and trends from 1969 t0 1988. The records include publicity on library programs, flyers or notices from the library to the public, and special bibliographies, materials catalogs and resource handbooks. A few sample overdue notices are also included.

Of special note: Samples of regular publication pamphlets or booklets such as, "Program Resource Handbook," "Where to Volunteer in Vigo County," "What to See in Vigo County," "Directory of Voluntary Clubs and Organizations," and "Combined Church Materials List," can be found in Folder 6 as well as in other parts of the collection. These materials not only reflect library concerns, but give a lot of information about the community at the time of publication.

Other specific materials of interest include the Railroad Car Library Project (Folder 1), the American Bicentennial (Folders 6, 8 and 9), the Oral History programs (Folders 13 and 14), the West Central Indiana Holocaust Conference (Folder 15), and the VCPL Centennial Celebration (Folder 15).

The publication files were kept in chronological order and this collection maintains that same order.

****Publication files for the years 1984-1988 contained few, if any, examples of materials published. Most files at this time only included the pink work order form which gave minimal information on what was published. The work order forms were weeded from the collection.
