History

The Banks of the Wabash Chorus membership is comprised of several local barbershop quartets and holds membership in the Cardinal Chapter (Indiana and Kentucky) of the larger Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). Its early roots stem from the local Elks Minstrel, a men's singing group of the 1920s. The chorus was financially supported by the Terre Haute Benevolent Order of Elks. By 1939, the National Elks clubs each had their own singing Elks Chanters and promoted competitions between these choruses. In Terre Haute, Carl C. Jones organized the local Elks Chanters. Although the group originally sang glee club arrangements, it eventually focused almost exclusively on barbershop harmony due to Jones' direction and the influence of the SPEBSQSA. After Jones' death in 1953, the group was inactive until 1965 when it adopted its new name, Banks of the Wabash Chorus.
