History
The Family Service Association of Terre Haute traces its formal organizational roots to 1882 when it was known as the Society for Organizing Charity. The organization is now known (Jan. 2010) as FSA Counseling & Behavioral Health.
The Family Service Association was "born" in 1862 when a Ladies' Aid Society was established for the relief of the families of men serving in the Union Army during the Civil War.
Charitable giving in Terre Haute operated in this informal fashion until 1882 when prominent Hauteans emulated the "Charity Movement" in Europe and the eastern United States and founded a Society for Organizing Charity (SOC). Citizens in Indianapolis had founded their own Society a few months earlier. The Terre Haute SOC's first officers included Mayor James Lyne, Superintendent of Schools William Wiley, Colonel Richard W. Thompson, Mrs. D. W. Minshall and several other prominent Hauteans.
Terre Haute's Society for Organizing Charity was led in its early years by Charles Henderson, pastor of the First Baptist Church. The SOC's constitution set out five goals:
Relief of all deserving cases of destitution;
Prevention of indiscriminate and duplicate giving;
Employing the destitute in useful work instead of providing them with outright financial aid;
Prevention of deception from those not truly in financial distress;
Reduction of vagrancy and pauperism and determination of their true causes
Terre Haute's Society for Organizing Charity employed the principles of "friendship" as their operational philosophy. Society volunteers were referred to as "friendly visitors" and a Friendly Inn was opened in 1883 at the northwest corner of Fourth and Walnut Streets in which to maintain offices and lodge transients. The "means test" for worthy applicants consisted of the Friendly Inn staff requiring applicants for shelter to chop a certain amount of lumber for the use of the Inn before the applicant could gain entrance.
The Friendly Inn was the first of several local charitable endeavors created by the Society for Organizing Charity and was in operation into the 1960s. In 1907, the Society established the Fresh Air Mission which provided youngsters with brief respites at outdoor camps. In 1912, the Society established the Tuberculosis Association which later became the Vigo County Tuberculosis Society. In 1917, the Society for Organizing Charity was a cofounder of the local American Red Cross Chapter. And in 1919, the Society organized the Welfare League which is now (2009) the Wabash Valley Community Foundation.
The Family Service Association also participated in the Health/Welfare Annual Fund Appeal and was a member of the Council of Social Agencies of Terre Haute.
The organization which formally started as the Society for Organizing Charity (1882-1935) is now known as FSA Counseling & Behavioral Health (est. 2001) but has operated under several names including the Family Welfare Society of Terre Haute (1935-1948), the Family Service Association of Terre Haute (1948-1993), and the Family Service Association of the Wabash Valley, Inc. (1993-2001).
Content and Scope of Collection
The collection includes constitutions, bylaws, annual and monthly reports, minutes, correspondence, financial statements, news clippings, photographs and bound publications.
The collection also contains materials from the Fresh Air Mission, the Health/Welfare Annual Fund Appeal, the Welfare League, the Community Council and the Council of Social Agencies of Terre Haute.
Note: This
collection is referred to as the “Family Service Association of
Terre Haute” because this was the name under which the
organization was operating at the time that the latest item in
the collection was created.
