History

Throughout the United States, women organized Home Economics clubs to "enlarge, improve and endear the greatest institution in the world--the home." Many of the home economics clubs (later called Homemakers Clubs) were established in the 1930s to offer women lessons in cooking and house-keeping. Popular throughout the state of Indiana, these clubs particularly served rural women who were geographically isolated. Home demonstration agents from the county extension office would help groups organize and often a trained home economist would conduct special classes.

Content and Scope of the Collection

This collection contains brief histories of 44 Homemakers Clubs primarily throughout Vigo County, Indiana. The inventory folder contains additional information and correspondence regarding these histories as well as a brief history of the Past Presidents' Club.
