History
The Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute was founded sometime in 1916 and disbanded sometime between 1917 and 1918 according to a history of the club in a program for the “75th anniversary celebration” in 1995. The club reorganized on May 27, 1920 and has been in continuous operation since that time.
The Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute is a member organization of
Kiwanis International, headquartered in
Indianapolis, Indiana. The name “Kiwanis” means either “we build” or “we
trade” or “we share our talents.” It was coined from an American Indian
expression, Nunc Kee-wanis. The Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute has adopted “We
Build” as their motto. Kiwanians place special emphasis on service to
children and young adults. In accord with the
mission of Kiwanis International as a service organization, the Kiwanis Club of
Terre Haute has been active in community service in Terre Haute throughout the
club's history. Its longest standing commitment has been to the James Whitcomb
Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis but it has also assisted a wide
variety of schools and local non-profit organizations. In the past, the Kiwanis
Club raised money for its service projects by selling the “Newsy” (1940 and
1950s), and selling tickets for a Travel and Adventure film series
(1970s-1990s). Their latest endeavor has been an annual Chili Day which began
in the early 1990s. The previously all-male Kiwanis Club of Terre Haute
admitted its first woman, Dolores Svendsen, in April 1990. The Kiwanis Club of
Terre Haute meets every Thursday at noon. It is a separate organization from
the Kiwanis Club of Greater Terre Haute. Content and Scope of Collection This collection consists of the records of the Kiwanis Club
of Terre Haute. It's records include minutes, official reports to Kiwanis
International, financial records, correspondence, general files, photographs,
newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, club newsletters and official Kiwanis
publications and 15 films which have been converted to DVD. The following items were transferred to the Vigo County
Historical Society in August 2008: a banner; a Kiwanis Newsy newsvendors' apron

was the same as the calendar year from its founding in 1920 until 1969. There
was an interim period when the administra-tive year ran from January 1969 to
September 1969. From Oct. 1969 to the time of writing (2008) the administrative
year has run from October of one year to September of the following year. For
