History

Leadership Terre Haute was created in 1978 through the efforts of Richard Landini and Alan Rankin, president and president emeritus respectively of Indiana State University. The two assembled community leaders to discuss the need for identifying potential leaders in the community and to help these individuals recognize and fully develop their leadership potential.

The planning group recognized the need for diversity in leadership and sought to include representatives from the labor unions, rural areas and minorities.  A Lilly Endowment Foundation grant of $5,000 helped the group, under the supervision of Rankin, to initiate a formal leadership program.  Business, educational institutions and individuals worked together to provide the necessary funding for activities and workshops, as well as scholarships for potential participants with limited access to tuition funding.

When the first participants convened, they divided into study groups that were organized around topics of community interest such as education, government, business and industry, and cultural and recreational challenges. Participants met with individuals and groups interested/affected by those problems, wrote up reports of their findings with recommendations for action.

Leadership Terre Haute is now known as Leadership Wabash Valley.  Its offices are located in Indiana State University's College of Business.

Content and Scope of Collection

This collection consists of several research papers prepared by study groups in Leadership Terre Haute's Class I (1978-1979) and Class II (1979-1980).
