History

"In 1961 we started to energize a group, mostly as a result of casual meetings, with those interested and happened to meet at Mischler's hardware store on South Third Street. Fred had in the store lapidary equipment which he sold as well as operated. From this the club developed." (November 1976 newsletter)

By 1966, the Vigo Rock and Mineral Club, Inc. had become the Vigo Rock and Gem Club and was meeting regularly in the Science Building at Indiana State University. The local club was a member of the Midwest Federation and hosted programs, field trips, and an annual rock show. The group disbanded circa 1989.

Content and Scope of the Collection

This collection was generated from materials found in the Community Affairs file in Special Collections and contains a series of newsletters from the Vigo Rock and Gem Club from 1966 to 1983. The local newsletter appears to have been published monthly, so several issues are missing from this collection.

The newsletter lists officers of the Vigo Rock and Gem Club and contains information on monthly meetings, programs, field trips, and rock shows as well as short articles on geology and related subjects. The "Midwest Federation's Newsletter" (which is published monthly--except for July and August--as a service to member clubs) is often attached to the local newsletter.

The following newsletters contain the local club's membership list: June 1969, March 1975, February 1977, April 1978, and April 1983.
