History
The Commercial Solvents Corporation was established at the end of World War I and earned distinction as the pioneer producer of acetone and butanol by fermentation processes developed and patented by Dr. Chaim Weizmann. Terre Haute was selected as the home of CSC research because location at this plant made possible the convenient translation of new processes from laboratory and pilot-plant to full-scale production. Over the years, the products of Commercial Solvents have included specialty and commodity chemicals for industry, agricultural chemicals, animal health and nutrition products, industrial explosives, and carbon blacks. CSC remained an independent company until 1975 when it merged with the International Minerals and Chemical Corporation (IMC) and became a wholly-owned subsidiary of IMC. Eventually, IMC bought Pitman-Moore Inc., another company involved in animal products, and the Terre Haute plant changed its name to Pitman-Moore in 1987. Schering Plough bought out Pitman-Moore in 1998 and the plant's name was changed to Schering Plough Animal Health. The Terre Haute plant was permanently shut down on January 28, 2000.
Content and Scope of Collection
This collection contains historical items about the Commercial Solvents Corporation including annual reports, brochures, company newsletters, and photographs.
Much of the collection consists of Commercial Solvents Corporation's monthly newsletter, both in pre-publication form (consisting of photographs and captions) and in its final published form and is arranged in chronological order. The newsletter provided news about the social activities of plant employees, news of newly hired employees, retirement parties/cere-monies for retiring employees, death notices for the families of current and retired employees, annual dinners and annual picnics. One can also trace the name changes of the company through the name changes in the newsletter. Throughout its life, the newsletter was known variously as the "Spirit of the Nation" (1938-1988), "The Pitman-Moore Spirit" (1989-1993) and "Terre Haute InSite" (1998-1999).
(Occasionally, there are issues missing from various years. There is a five year gap between 1993 and 1998. When the original Commercial Solvents Corporation was taken over by Schering Plough in 1998, the newsletter went without a name from February 1998 to April 1998 while a contest was held to name the newsletter. As noted above, the newsletter was named "Terre Haute InSite" and lasted from April 1998 to August, 1999.)
The collection also contains layouts of the newsletter's photographs and caption from 1956 to 1985. In addition there are 135 photographs that were found loose. No attempt was made to place the photographs in order. However, the photographs are of four general categories: (1) aerial and exterior views of the Terre Haute plant and other plants, (2) interior pictures of various manufacturing areas in the plant, (3) product lines manufactured by the Commercial Solvents Corporation and (4) pictures of animals that were used as experimental subjects for testing of products in development by the Commercial Solvents Corporation.
The collection also contained 6 books, mostly pertaining to the history of the Commercial Solvents Corporation prior to 1970. One book was found in a folder labeled "History of CSC" and is being kept with those materials in Document Case 1. The other books are housed in Document Case 12.
A photocopy of a thank-you from the family of a deceased employee and a clipping with "Charles Seevey 1987" are included in the inventory folder of the collection.
