 History

The First Baptist Church was organized in an old brick schoolhouse on the corner of Fifth and Walnut Streets in July 1836. Religious services were held at various sites until the congregation decided in 1847 to build a permanent church on the west side of Fourth Street, between Mulberry and Eagle Streets.

The church was dedicated in 1850 and services were held there until the church was destroyed by a tornado in September, 1861. The congregation purchased a lot at the corner of Sixth and Cherry Streets but delayed building another church, using an already existing brick chapel. In 1877, the congregation finally began construction of a new church which was dedicated in 1880.

In February, 1914, the First Baptist congregation made plans to move from Sixth and Cherry Streets and build a larger church at Sixth and Walnut Streets. The corner-stone was laid in October, 1914 and the church was dedicated with a Sunday service on April 23, 1916.

In 1968, the congregation moved to and held its first religious service at its present location at 4701 Poplar Street on April 28, 1968. The church was dedicated on September 29, 1968.

This collection consists of an incomplete series of bulletins of the First Baptist Church from 1994 to 1996 and from 2000 to the present.
