Content and Scope of Collection

This is a collection of five handwritten letters addressed to Chester Adams of Terre Haute with dates ranging from 1862 to 1874.

The first four letters from J. P. Usher appear to be in regard to the sale of farm land and related business activities. In the fifth letter, correspondent J. H. Moore appears to be a soldier in the Civil War and relates to how he is adjusting to life in the South.

A Chester Adams appears in the 1850 Federal Census. His occupation is "lumber merchant". Bradsby, in the History of Vigo County, Indiana, mentions a Chester Adams as a resident of the county around 1840. A Chester Adams was living in Terre Haute in 1872 to 1878-1879. After 1879, his name no longer appears in the City Directory.
