Biography

John Garland Biel was born in Terre Haute ca. 1907 and was an attorney.

Biel was a member of the National Society of Sons of the American Revolution and was active in the Vigo County Historical Society.  He was president of the Vigo County Historical Society from 1964 to 1970.

John Biel died in McAllen, Texas in February 1994.  He is buried in Roselawn Cemetery.

Content and Scope of Collection

This collection contains Biel's correspondence concerning the following projects: 

  • writing of a comprehensive history of Vigo County and Terre Haute

  • creation of a Fort Harrison Indian Artifacts Society

  • creation of the William Henry Harrison Trail Commission and

  • revival of the Indiana Society of the War of 1812.
