History of Organization
In 1927 wives of Terre Haute physicians, after having been guests at a meeting of the Indianapolis Medical Society Auxiliary, enlisted the aid of their husbands in organizing an Auxiliary in Vigo County.
At a dinner meeting of husbands and wives at the Elks Club in November 1927, the Auxiliary to the Vigo County Medical Society was formed. The first meeting of the Auxiliary was held January 3, 1928, when a constitution and by-laws were adopted and committees appointed.
Purpose of the Auxiliary
The Auxiliary was formed to enable Terre Haute wives to help their physician husbands in any way possible, to participate in educational and philanthropic programs and to plan social events.
Content and Scope of Collection
The Auxiliary records contain some historical background material, lists of charter members, officers, committees, a history of the organization (1927-1975), minutes and financial statements (Nov. 1927-May 1974) and scrapbook materials (1930-1977).
A hiatus occurs between May 1961-May 1965.
