Content and Scope of Collection

The materials in this collection document the meetings and programs of the Committee from its first active year, 1968, until the dissolution of the Vigo County Coordinating Council, with which it had merged, in 1977.
 

Background notes:

In 1967 following a number of casual conversations, Robert Conaty (Family Service Association), Jimmy Tinkle (Vigo County Public Library) and Caye Hudson (Indiana State University), formed the Family Life Education Committee, a community organization they determined was needed to foster better relations between parents and teenagers. During 1968, beginning with "Tuning in the Other Generation," a six-session series that was held for 8^th and 9^th graders and their parents between February 26 and April 1 at St. Anthony's Hospital. The Committee provided several series of programs that brought together teenagers, parent, doctors, clergymen and other professionals to work together in improving communications within the family.

As the Family Life Education Committee gathered momentum, it petitioned the Vigo County Coordinating Council (VCCC) for committee status. At their Sept. 17, 1968 meeting, members of the VCCC moved and seconded a motion that the Family Life Education Committee "become a new Standing Committee." The motion was carried. Robert Conaty agreed to serve as chairman.
