Content and Scope of Collection

This collection consists of monthly tally sheets of rainfall and river-level measurements taken at the Wabash River Rainfall Station and of monthly tally sheets of daily weather observations in Vigo County.

The Cooperative Observer Meteorological Record (1892-1905) and the Voluntary Observer Meteorological Record (1906-1910) provided daily recordings of the temperature at 7:00 a.m.; precipitation amounts, prevailing wind direction, "character of the day" reports (rain, clear, cloudy, snow); and in a category called "Miscellaneous Phenomena", additional remarks on weather conditions.

The "Report of the Wabash River Rainfall Station" (1912-1949) and the "Record of Climatological and Hydrologic Observations" (1949) recorded daily precipitation levels, including whether the precipitation was rain or "snow, hail, or sleet"; the beginning and ending times for the precipitation; the total accumulation of snow, sleet or hail in inches; the flood stage; the warning stage; and the current height of the river.

The Records of Climatological Observations (August 1954-December 1955) recorded daily minimum and maximum temperatures at 7:00 a.m.; 24 hour precipitation amounts; weather conditions (fog, sleet, glaze, thunder, hail, damaging wind) and "important" weather conditions (rain, frost, snow flurries).
