Content and Scope of Collection
This collection consists of the Vigo County Historical Society's
publication Leaves of Thyme and a letter from Juliet Peddle to
Alice Haupt which briefly discusses the Historical Society. The collection was
donated to the Archives by Edward K. Spann in memory of Juliet Peddle and her
many contributions to Terre Haute.
The issues of Leaves of Thyme in this collection were edited by Juliet Peddle and published by the Vigo County Historical Society. Leaves provided members of the Historical Society with news about previous and upcoming meetings, activities of other historical societies, brief historical accounts about local events and people, and recent acquisitions of local history and genealogical materials by the Emeline Fairbanks Memorial Library.
Juliet Alice Peddle (1899-1979) was a professional architect, dedicated amateur historian and long-time member of the board of directors for the Vigo County Historical Society. From 1950 to 1979, Peddle edited and supervised the publication of Leaves of Thyme out of her professional offices in the Opera House Building at 7th and Cherry Streets. The periodical was published ten times per year until 1976 when rising costs forced the Society to reduce its publication to five issues per year. The purpose of the periodical (and the Society) was and is “to preserve the valuable records of the past and create an interest in and appreciation of the foundations upon which our present society has developed.”
For a more extensive biography of Peddle's life and a detailed account of Peddle's involvement with Leaves of Thyme and the Vigo County Historical Society see Juliet Peddle of Terre Haute: The Architect, The Historian, and Her City, 1899-1979 by Harriet M. Caplow, Joyce Lakey Shanks, Edward Kenneth Spann, and Helene C. Steppe.
