Content and Scope of the Collection

The Real News was established in June 1998 to provide an alternative newspaper for the Wabash Valley. Primarily, it focused on African-American issues with the first issue publishing its mission statement:

"It is our mission to inform and educate our community regarding the hypocrisy of the American system of government and economics that proclaims to serve all Americans equally. It is not our intention to offend anyone, but to elevate the minds of all people and to illuminate our own culture that has been masked and diluted for so long." (Real News, Vol. 1, Issue 1, June 4, 1998)

The first issue also outlined its format, which would attempt to cover local news, religious news, sports, classified ads, and national news. The newspaper staff included: Dr. T.W. Smith, publisher; S.R. Galloway, editor; LaKina Curry, news editor.

This collection contains a full run of the weekly publication Real News. The newspapers are stored loose in chronological order.
