Content and Scope of the Collection

This collection contains nearly a full run of the Vanguard News, a local newspaper focusing on Terre Haute's African-American community and culture. The editorial page in the first issue introduces the purpose and philosophy of the paper:

"This paper is about why, where and in what matter black people in Terre Haute must get themselves together. It is about black people taking care of business. The business of and for black people. The stakes are really very simple: If this paper succeeds, we will exercise control over our lives, politically, economically and psychically. We will also contribute to the development of a viable black community..." (Vanguard News, Vol. 1, No. 1, August 5, 1994)

Vanguard News began as a bi-weekly publication of the Unity Group, which was founded May 7, 1994, and Phillip Norton served as editor. By the sixth issue, Norton had become both the publisher and editor and served in this capacity for the remainder of the paper's run. Articles focused on both local and national issues pertinent to African-Americans, and the newspaper promoted local ads for black businesses.

Contributing writers in Vanguard News include: Dr. Geneva Ross, Kwame Okoampa-Ahoofe Jr., Alex Williams, Rosalind McKnight, Marshall S. Jones, Jeanette Smith, Bessie Ross, Angel Huffman, Orville A. Alexander Jr., Charles N. White Jr., Dr. Warren C. Swindell, and Kenneth Coopwood. An extensive series of articles by Geneva Ross on the history of the African-American community in Lost Creek, Vigo County, appeared in several issues. (Copies of the Lost Creek articles can be found under "African Americans" in the Community Affairs File, Special Collections.)
