Content and Scope of Collection

This collection consists of examination essays and artwork of students enrolled at the Lutheran School at 635 Poplar Street. The school was affiliated with the German Evangelical Lutheran Church.

According to instructor F. Rechlin's “teacher statement” form, which preceded many of the examinations, the school had 50 students in the 3rd through 8th grades.  However, due to “contagious disease” only 28 students were present.  The school was “ungraded”, which means all the students were together in a room.

The subjects covered in the essays were American history, civics and geography; math, science, basic grammar, artwork and a Lutheran catechism (religion course).
