School Class Pin
Accession Number: Sm. D.C. 36B
Description: 1 file folder in a small document case
Donor: Estate of John Biel
Content and Scope of Collection
This collection consists of a class pin belonging to an unidentified 1905 graduate of Wiley High School. The pin was found in an envelope marked as originating from John G. Biel's law office on the third floor of the Star Building in Terre Haute.
John Biel was born in 1907 so he was not the original owner of the pin. The combination of several genealogical reference sources indicate that the pin may have belonged to Glen Curry, John Biel's uncle on his mother's side of the family. First, the Indiana census for 1920 shows a 13-year-old “Jack” Biel living in Terre Haute with his parents William and Sue. Second, the WPA index of Indiana marriages from 1880 to 1920 shows the marriage of William Biel to Sue A. Curry in Vigo County in 1900. Third, the 1900 Vigo County census shows Sue Curry living with her parents and a brother named Glen. Finally, the Wiley High School yearbook for 1971 shows a Glen Curry as a graduate of the Class of 1905.
Unfortunately, there is no record of the pin actually belonging to Glen Curry nor is it known how it came into the possession of John Biel.
