History
During World War II the staff of the Emeline Fairbanks Memorial Library compiled scrapbooks of material documenting the contributions of Terre Haute, Vigo County and the Wabash Valley to the American war effort. In 2004, these scrapbooks were transferred from the Special Collections Department to the Community Archives.
The material was originally glued into Scrapbooks numbered from 1 to 15. Some of the Scrapbooks were further divided into additional scrapbooks (5A, 5B, 9A, 9B, 10A, 10B, 10C, 15A, 15B). A "Scrapbook 14" was not found when this collection was initially inventoried in the 1980s by staff in the Special Collections Department. An article in the Terre Haute Tribune of December 3, 1944 indicates that one of the scrap-books contained newspaper maps describing the progress of the war. It is possible that Scrapbook 14 may have been the map scrapbook.
For preservation purposes, the contents have been removed from their original scrapbooks and placed in acid-free folders.
Content and Scope of Collection
This collection consists of War Department publications, newspaper clippings from the Terre Haute Star and the Terre Haute Tribune and photographs. Most of the scrapbooks are made up of several sections which are indicated at the top left corner. Page numbers have been written in on the top right side of the page.
The scrapbooks seem to have been filled according to optimum use of space rather than on a chronological basis. Therefore, there is a great deal of overlap in dates from one scrapbook section to another.
There is a small amount of material concerning five soldiers who died in the Korean War and one soldier who died in Formosa (Taiwan) in Scrapbook 15B.
Immediately following is a general description of each scrapbook followed by a folder-level description.
