Content and Scope of Collection

Born in Pomeroy, Ohio, on March 16, 1844, Austin Murphy moved to Putnam County, Indiana, with his parents when he was still a child. During the Civil War (1861-65), Murphy served in Company H, 43rd Regiment Indiana Volunteers and then re-enlisted with the 18th United States Infantry. After the war, he married Mary A. Coffman on August 27, 1866 and eventually settled in Terre Haute. He died there on November 19, 1926.

This collection contains a photocopy of Austin Murphy's Civil War pocket diary for the year 1864. Daily entries chronicle the activities of the 18th United States Infantry while camped at Chattanooga, Tennessee, and during the Atlanta campaign which started in May 1864. Murphy includes detailed accounts of encounters with the Confederate forces as well as his stay in the hospital after he is wounded in battle.
