Biography

Harrison and William Nay were brothers of Lucinda (Nay) Yowel.  Harrison mustered into Company H, 79th Illinois Infantry on August 28, 1862.  He died June 26, 1864 at Danville, Virginia as a prisoner of war.  His brother William was drafted and mustered into Company H, 59th Illinois Infantry September 28, 1864, and mustered out June 14, 1865.

Content and Scope of Collection 

The collection consists of ten letters written to John and Lucinda Yowel primarily from family and friends during the 1860s and personal inventories of Harrison Nay's estate.  Those letters from Harrison and William were written while they were in the Union Army and mention sickness and being hospitalized, troop movements, and seeing the graves from prior engagements, among other things.
