History
The Rose Ladies Aid Society originated in 1862 when a group of Vigo County women informally organized to give aid to Union soldiers' families that were in financial distress. The women's charitable endeavors were funded primarily by Chauncey Rose, a local businessman and philanthropist, who knew the charter members of this ad hoc group and was interested enough in their efforts to become their financial benefactor.
Chauncey Rose was integral to the charitable works of the future Rose Ladies Aid Society from 1862 until well after his death. At the end of the Civil War, the women organized as the "Ladies Aid Society" to carry on their charitable endeavors for the impoverished of the community. By 1866, because their financial resources were nearly depleted, the Ladies Aid Society held a meeting to decide whether to disband. While the meeting was in progress Rose sent the Society $500 and a written request that the Society continue its work. In 1868, Rose used his influence to successfully persuade the Indiana Legislature to enact landmark legislation allowing women who carried out charitable work to incorporate legally. As a result, the Ladies Aid Society was able to legally incorporate in 1869. On the same day Rose made a $90,000 endowment in railroad bonds to the Society. When Chauncey Rose died in 1877, he endowed an additional $100,000 to the Ladies Aid Society with the stipulation that the interest from the endowment be used for the assistance of "worthy poor people". This money lasted well into the twentieth century.
Each member of the Rose Ladies Aid Society was assigned a section of Terre Haute in which they were responsible for dispensing charitable contributions. Members personally delivered charitable donations of fuel, clothing, medicine, rent, money for education, or other necessities and kept in close contact with the existing conditions of their assigned individuals and communities.
The Ladies Aid Society expanded in the scope of its charitable endeavors in 1889 upon the donation by William R. McKeen of his home and property at 1016 N. 6th Street to the Society for the operation of a Home for Aged Women in memory of his wife, Sarah Dowling McKeen. The Society opened the Home to qualified residents in June 1, 1889.
In December 1891, after several years of discussion, the Ladies Aid Society renamed itself the Rose Ladies Aid Society in honor of Chauncey Rose's financial (and political) contributions to the maintenance of the Society.
The Rose Ladies Aid Society was forced to close the Home for Aged Women in 1896 due to lack of funds. The Rose Ladies then engaged in a 25-year effort to raise a sufficient endowment, eventually reopening the Home for Aged Women in 1922. Members of the Society were responsible for management of the Home. Renamed the Sarah Dowling Home in 1959 in honor of McKeen's wife, the Home closed permanently in 1972.
The Rose Ladies Aid Society was still in operation as recently as 1993.
Content and Scope of Collection
This collection consists of ledger sheets compiled by members of the Rose Ladies Aid Society on a monthly basis of charitable contributions that they personally dispensed to their assigned clientele of the "worthy poor" of Vigo County. Members frequently compiled reports recapitulating several-month intervals of cumulative charitable donations. While most of these reports described contributions over the previous twelve months, others were reports on time periods of shorter duration. The accounts list recipients and the type of aid distributed in the form of rent, clothing, groceries, and/or other necessities.
The collection also contains reports of the Rose Ladies Aid Society's Committee of Supplies and Finances for the Home for Aged Women (1889-1892).
