Tips for Successful Downloading @ Home

  • Please be aware that download times can run up to 10 times longer than given estimates.

Tips for Successful Downloading @ the Library

  • Starting a download within 2 hours of Library & Computer Lab closing is not recommended.
  • Audiobooks may not be downloaded in the Library on Sundays.
  • The Library does not provide MP3 players nor USB connectors for MP3 players.
  • If transferring a file to a portable device, please complete this at the download session as downloaded files are not stored on Library computers.
  • The Library is not responsible for damages that may occur to users' portable devices.
  • The Library does not guarantee compatibility of users' portable devices with Library equipment.
  • Blank CDs are available for $2 each; 2 gigabyte USB drives are available for $10 each. See the Lending Desk to purchase.
To download audiobooks at home, you will need:
  • A home computer or laptop with one of the following operating systems:
    • Windows 98 Second Edition (SE)
    • Windows 2000
    • Windows Millennium Edition (ME)
    • Windows XP
    • Windows Vista
    • Windows 7
  • Windows Media Player 9 or higher
  • A valid VCPL borrowers card
  • An e-mail address

To download audiobooks at VCPL, you will need to bring the following:
  • Your MP3 player & its USB cable


Using Indiana Digital Media (Audiobooks & eBooks)

  • Check to see that your device is supported:
  • Download & Install Free Software:
    • In the left column under Digital Software, click OverDrive Media Console.
    • Choose and download the appropriate version of the software for your machine.
    • Follow the instructions on your screen to install the software to your computer.
  • Register Your Free Software:
    • Indiana Digital Media - Media Console utilizes Windows Media Player 9 series or newer. The first time the Player attempts to open a protected file, it will alert you that a Security Update must be performed before the file may be opened.
    • The update takes just a few moments and is a one-time process that must be performed.
  • Find Books & Check Out:
    • Search or Browse to find titles.
    • Click Add to Cart or Place a Hold (for titles that are already checked out).
    • When finished, click Proceed to Checkout.
    • Select Vigo County Public Library from the dropdown menu & enter your library card number & PIN (usually the last 4 digits of your home phone number).
    • Click Confirm Checkout.
    • Click the Download box under the book cover.
    • Choose to Save the file to your computer to complete the download.

Transferring to a Portable Player

General Tips for Using Windows Media Player:
  • Make sure your portable device is connected to the computer using the device's USB cable.
  • Find your downloaded audiobook file & double click to open it with Windows Media Player.
  • Stop playback of the file before transferring to the portable device.
  • Add the audiobook file to a playlist to be added or synced to a portable device & click Copy or Start Sync to transfer the file.
