Afternoon with the Force

Every year fans around the galaxy gather to cheer their favorite force-using heroes. Youth Services decided it was time we joined the Galactic Republic in rejoicing and hosted our own Star Wars celebration. Games and crafts begin our afternoon focused around George Lucas' galaxy far, far away, with a Star Wars film showing directly after our celebration.

Baby Signs: Sign, Say & Play Class

Baby signs helps babies ages 6-18 months to communicate their wants, needs and special requests before they can speak using sign language. This series of six, theme-based classes includes learning signs based on themes such as mealtime, bedtime, bath time, getting dressed, park and pet signs. Each week families learn useful signs through fun songs, books and activities. This series of programs is open to the first 6 parent and child groups that preregister.

It's play time at the Vigo County Public Library! Join us for a 75 minute play-based program that gives parents and caregivers the opportunity to spend time with their infants and toddlers in a group setting. Librarians and community resource professionals will be available for questions and consultations during the program.

The Pillowcase Project, sponsored by Disney, is a preparedness education program for children in grades 3 - 5, which teaches students about personal and family preparedness, local hazards, and basic coping skills. The hour long presentation is perfect for schools, after-school programs, Girl and Boy Scout troop meetings, and more. Red Cross volunteers lead students through a "learn, practice, share" framework to engage them in disaster preparedness. Upon completion, students receive a sturdy pillowcase in which to build their personal emergency supplies kit. Presentations are customized to focus on a hazard that is important and relevant to the local community.

Purdue Extension is coming to the library and they are bringing blocks. Lots of blocks! Playing with blocks is not only fun it also provides unique opportunities for building positive relationships and increasing early learning and school readiness skills, especially in the areas of math, science, pre-reading, physical and social skills.
