Vigo County Public Library offers the following:
- Large Print Books
The library has an extensive collection of large print books at the Main Library, the West Branch and in our Outreach Department. These can be easily transferred between locations for your convenience.
- Books on Compact Disc and Cassette
Thousands of books are available on compact disc (CD) to listen to for those who can operate the CD player themselves, or have a sighted helper. We also have a lesser number of titles in cassette format.
- Magazines and Newspapers
The Matilda Ziegler Magazine for the Blind [in Braille] is located in the Reference Department. This magazine publishes general interest articles selected from 30 popular magazines and 4 national newspapers. For more information, consult www.matildaziegler.org.
The New York Times Large Print Weekly is located in the Reference room. The current issue is located on the newspaper rack. Older copies are retained for 5 weeks.
- Synapse ADA Computer
Computer Lab 2 at the Main Library has a new Synapse ADA computer equipped with the talking software Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. This software allows the user to perform "...tasks such as opening and closing software applications, creating documents, sending email & surfing the internet...by speaking to the PC with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10 software." "A high fidelity PC headset with a noise cancelling microphone is available for use.... Sanitary covers are provided and personal headsets may be substituted if desired."
It also features Zoomtext Magnifier/Reader 9.1, which enlarges and reads text out loud, "...so you can see and hear what you're doing in all of your applications & make all of your applications easy to see and use."
Text Help Read & Write 9 "allows users with reading and writing difficulties, learning disabilities such as dyslexia or English as a second language to improve reading fluency and comprehension through text-to-speech, screenshot reader, online translator, and numerous other literacy tools."
WindowEyes 7.11 is "a leading screen-reading software application for the blind and visually impaired which converts components of the Windows operating system into synthesized speech allowing complete access to Windows based computer systems."
The computer lab attendant can assist in getting you started on using this computer. Please call Community Services, 232-1113 X2282, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, to make an appointment.
- Magnifying Readers
The Main Library has two magnifying readers, one in the Reference area and one in General Collections. A book, newspaper, or magazine or other printed item can be placed on the screen, and it will be magnified to the amount needed by the user. The background can be adjusted to display white letters on a black background, or black letters on a white background.
- Outreach Services
The library’s Outreach Department will deliver materials once a month to patrons who are registered with them. This is a free service, and materials mentioned above that circulate are all items that could be brought to your home or apartment. This service is designed for people who are homebound and cannot come to the library on their own. Call 232-1113 and ask for Outreach to learn more about this service.

Local Support Group - Good Cheer Club for the Blind
Meets 2nd Wednesday of the month at various places. Have noon meal and short program. For more information, contact Pat Fulmer, 466-6334 or Rosemary Morgan, 232-7533.

“Our mission: to ensure that people with disabilities have full and complete access to the community in which they live.” The WILL Center offers many items to assist those with sight-related or other difficulties. Danny Beemer has access to extensive resources to help individuals, and will make home visits.

This program mails audio players to blind individuals, individuals with diminished vision, or any individual who is physically incapable of holding a book who is a resident of the state of Indiana. It offers an extensive collection of materials to listen to which are mailed in return postage prepaid envelopes.

“The TBBL is the Indiana Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, one of 57 regional libraries of the Library of Congress' National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (NLS). The Talking Book and Braille Library has been an important part of the Indiana State Library since 1934, when it became part of the NLS program.”
- Braille Library
The Indiana State Library has over 13,800 books and magazines in Braille for the use of its citizens.

“The large print collection contains over 12,000 titles, as well as a few magazines.”
