Accession Number:  Sm. D.C. 36E
Description: 4 file folders in a small document case
Donor:  Genevieve Reisner

The Association for Adult Education was organized in July 1956 by eighteen adults interested in formal and informal adult education.  The meeting was held at the Emeline Fairbanks Memorial Library and was led by librarian Stillman Taylor.

The Association for Adult Education was modeled after similar groups in Decatur, Illinois and Gary and Indianapolis, Indiana.  These groups had compiled a directory of local organizations with educational objectives and a monthly calendar of adult education activities.

The Terre Haute group held several organizational meetings and program planning meetings before holding their first public meeting on November 1956.  In a note transferring these items to archivist Lois Harris , Genevieve Reisner noted that the Association “sort of fizzled out, especially after we had full-time staff working in that area” in the Library's Group Services Department.
