Content and Scope of Collection

This collection consists of items from the Honey Creek Home Builders Club and the Springhill Neighborhood Club.  Godschalk was secretary of the Home Builders Club (January 1970 to December 1970) and secretary of the Springhill Neighbors Club (September 1959 to May 1961).

The Honey Creek Home Builders Club was part of a network of homemaker clubs formed under the auspices of Purdue University's Cooperative Extension Service in West Lafayette, Indiana.  According to the constitution of the Club's local parent organization,  the Vigo County Home Demonstration Association, “the object of this association is to extend to the homemakers the opportunities to study homemaking problems under the trained leadership of the Vigo County Extension Service, Home Demonstration Extension of Purdue University and the United States Department of Agriculture.”  Home demonstration agents from the county extension office would help groups organize and often a trained home economist would conduct special classes.  The clubs also received periodic informational sheets on topics ranging from kitchen carpeting to recipes.

The members of the Honey Creek Club also participated the Vigo County Association of Mental Health's Adopt-a-Patient program in which they would correspond with patients in mental hospitals.

The Springhill Neighborhood Club was apparently formed prior to 1958.  The main purpose of the club seemed to be the opportunity to socialize with occasional charitable endeavors.
